Big Joe, small start
From a humble dorm room in West Michigan, Big Joe started with the idea that your average bean bag could be better. Over the years, our product line has grown and technologies matured, but at the end of the day, we're still just looking for a great place to sit.
Two guys, a bean bag, and some shredded foam
Have you ever had one of those stroke-of-genius ideas while sitting around your dorm room? Plopped on an uncomfortable bean bag, Big Joe co-founders, Matt Jung and Chip George became inventors and business owners in that instant. While staring at a pile of abandoned foam mattresses and cushions nearby, they decided to fill up their sad bag with some of that foam. (Note to our old R.A.: sorry.)
And *poof*, the Fuf is born
Matt and Chip's floormates couldn't get enough of their upgraded bean bag. They quickly recognized a market for these bags they had created on a whim. After non-stop visits to universities around Michigan to show their newly-named "Fuf," they convinced the GM at a local Meijer to purchase 50. The first batch sold out in eight days, and the second in 12. Meijer ordered 1,200 more Fufs, spreading them across the state.
And we grew up... quickly
Our moms sewed our first fabric covers for our only product. We worked out of an unheated barn using a woodchipper to shred foam before we opened our first plant. Now we have three plants, and more than 300 employees across the nation. We've developed three technogie–Megahh bean, Ahhsome foam, and Orahh molded core–that can be found in every single product we sell.
Now, there's comfort for all
And today, Big Joe is everywhere for everybody. We believe our business is only as strong as the community it serves. That's why "Comfort for all" has been our mantra since we started–we believe that all butts are created equal. As we've expanded our products, we've also expanded our impact. We still source up-cycled content for our Ahhsome foam (and now ask permission first). And we give back 10% of our profits to organizations that bring comfort to people and neighborhoods in need.
Creating a more comfortable future
We've had a lot of fun throughout the years as we've grown from a dorm room idea into a national brand. And we think the best part of our story is still ahead of us. We're excited to find more ways of creating comfortable seating for all, by doing the right thing and always looking for a better way. So, get comfortable. We're gonna be here for awhile.
